I have heard a lot about this lap band surgery thing and how it can help a person in losing weight.
If you do not know what is a lap band, it actually comes from the Lap Band System, which is a brand name of the FDA-approved, adjustable gastric band used in the procedure. To put it simply, a lap band is a silicone belt that looks like this:
and once it goes around the top of the stomach where it should be, it will look like this:
What this does is that you will be able to control your hunger and achieve a "feeling of fullness" in your stomach after a meal. By having this, you will eat much less and should feel full sooner.
A key component of the Lap-Band System is of course, its adjustability. The band is connected to a port, which enables the device to be inflated over time to expedite the weight loss.
After the surgery, the patient should be able to return to work within a week, with just minimal discomfort. A nutrition plan prescribed by the surgeon or nutritionist should be followed. A liquid diet for a few weeks is likely, until one can tolerate soft foods, and later on solid foods.
Patients typically lose 50% to 60% of their excess body weight within two years after having the surgery. Additional plastic surgery may be indicated, depending on how much weight is lost.
Thousands of people per year are getting this surgery to lose weight, and have succeeded. But please be informed that I do not think just anyone will be able to qualify for this surgery, so a doctor's consultation is highly advised.
